So happy you landed here. My intention is that our story helps improve yours!
It doesn’t make sense. It’s 2018, we’ve moved to the best school district in the state, everyone we talk to is having a great experience with public school, and every one especially LOVES the kindergarten centers their 5-year-olds are in. Except me, apparently. Other than a few awesome families we meet that year, I pretty much hate the whole “send-your-kid-away-all-day” with teachers that are nice & kinda care but would much rather be somewhere else.
By October of that very first year, my husband and I see our daughter shift from the bright, excited light she is to a dulled-down version of herself. Because she’s spending 7 hours a day, 5 days a week within these school walls, she was learning lots of behaviors and attitudes from people we’ve only ever encountered at a quick meet-and-greet.
We tried transferring her out, before we even got to winter break. “Give it more time…” “Everyone else’s kids are doing great…” “Let her settle in till after the new year…” etc. etc all in the back of my mind. The school district tells us they don’t have a seat open to transfer her elsewhere, and before we know it, the school year’s over.
After a quick summer break, we were upon another school year. Now we’d have two kids in public school, and by that time I was able to get them onto a new campus, in a new program. But we encountered more challenges–different sets of challenges for each kid in their separate buildings.
And then Covid hits and “virtual school” became a thing. And so does the idea of homeschooling…we’re doing it to an extent anyway, right?! Problem was we knew NOTHING about it, and know ZERO people teaching their kids at home for real.
But it became clear, after all our kids had dealt with, homeschooling was going to be our best option at least for the foreseeable future. And here we are… 5 years later, no regrets (other than not starting sooner), and not missing ‘traditional’ school at all!
When our decision to homeschool was made, I went looking for resources everywhere and learning as much as I could to help us figure it out!
I bought a course, read books, made lists + charts to help us to be more organized and plan out our daily homeschool rhythm. And overall it has flowed into a lifestyle that allows us so much more time freedom!
My intention is that this site helps you to feel empowered to do the same, to stay inspired, and make your homeschool a beautiful one too!
Kelly is a registered nurse with a background in pediatrics and the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). She spent most of her career with her favorite patient population (the babies + their families) for over ten years before leaving the hospital setting in 2020. Now a full-time stay-at-home mama, she and her husband homeschool their three children and raise chickens, sourdough, and veggies in their garden each year.
