    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Q: Should I give my homeschool a name?

A: Homeschooling allows for so much freedom! This includes what you name yours, and if you choose to. That being said, some states may have guidelines and require you to name your homeschool when registering with their Department of Education. You might also need one as your child grows and gets to high school level or becomes involved with certain activities. So giving your school a name may ultimately make your planning easier.

Q: How do I come up with my homeschool name?

A: Naming your homeschool is unique to you! Continue reading or scroll down the page further to see our seven recommendations for coming up with the perfect homeschool name ideas for your family!

Q: What is a good homeschool name?

A: A good homeschool name is guided by your preferences. You can choose words that inspire you, have a special meaning, or have a connection to your values or family. Use those word(s), for example, “Willow,” “River,” or “Brighton,” and connect it to an ending such as “Academy,” “School of Excellence,” or “Independent School.”

Q: What are examples of homeschool names?

A: A few random examples of homeschooling names would be “Willow Independent School,” “Brighton School of Excellence,” “South River Academy,” and “Thousand Acre School of the Arts.” Check if your state has any specific requirements, then create from there.

7 Easy Steps to Naming Your Homeschool

    1. Research the legal requirements for your state, if any

You can investigate this further at the Home School Legal Defense Association. And even if you are in a low-regulation state without many requirements, a name may still be needed when registering with your Department of Education.

    2. Consider incorporating your family values or family history

What is a running theme in your home that you may want to weave into your homeschool name? If you’ve got a foundation in God or something religious that you want to include, you could get inspo from some of your favorite Bible verses and incorporate words from there.

Another option would be to choose words from a family name (not necessarily your last name, if you’re going for something more official-sounding). You could also use a family theme, an ode to a grandparent, or something else that has a special meaning for your family over the generations.

    3. Look to location and nature for inspiration

Is there a specific place that’s important to your family? Consider a landmark or piece of nature that you may love and want to incorporate into your homeschooling aesthetic. This could include parks, plants, types of trees, directions (i.e. Northern, South, Westward, etc.), bodies of water, and whatever else you can think of!

    4. Look Ahead

You may think you’ll be homeschooling for the foreseeable future only and it’s just a temporary plan for your child’s schooling. But you may want to think twice before attaching words like “preschool,” “elementary,” or “high school” to any name you create. Some states do not let you change your name once you register with it. So ensure that what you choose won’t be limiting if you wind up homeschooling for longer than you originally intended! So many parents end up loving home school life and continuing beyond their originally planned time frame.

    5. Look even further ahead!

So now you know you likely don’t want to attach a word onto your homeschool title that classifies your child(ren) by a definitive age group. Now fast forward to the potential future where high school/college transcripts could be needed, and if the name you’re leaning towards would be appropriate for those future application needs. Something like “Forest Hill School” or “Bayview Pointe Academy” will probably be taken more seriously than something such as “ABC Day Homeschool!”

    6. Do a quick check on Google or your favorite search engine

Once you’ve established your homeschool name or at least have a list of potential options going, you can easily do a quick search online to make sure you’re not using the same exact verbiage as a school in your area! This could be a good double-check to avoid confusion or accidental affiliation with another establishment’s official name.

    7. Last tip: Print it out!

Frame it, hang it on the wall, and make it official 🙂 There’s something awesome about deciding on your school name and moving forward with your decision to homeschool in the first place!
